Note: "When Ludwig Wagner von Frommenhausen wrote to Solothurn in 1803 to obtain a letter of nobility as a supposed descendant of the patrician family that had recently died out there, a high-ranking Solothurn civil servant wrote in response to the request: "An outrageous request, unfounded by any trace." There is, however, a more recent reference in the files that suggests Dr. Johann Wagner originated in the former Zimmern and later Fürstenberg domains of Meßkirch. The claim by the above-mentioned Ludwig Wagner that his great-grandfather Dr. Johann Wagner was a professor or even Rector Magnificus in Heidelberg, which should be treated with caution, remains unproven and unverified to date. Certain, documented milestones in Dr. Johann Wagner's career include his activities as tutor to the young Baron Karl Ferdinand von Hohenberg (1618–1640), as the Oberamtmann (chief bailiff) of Bebenhausen (around 1638), and as a councilor of the Knightly Canton of Neckar-Schwarzwald (1643). A high point in Dr. Johann Wagner's career was his appointment as a councilor to Archduke Ferdinand Carl of Austria in 1648".
