Sir James Stuart (1780-1853), lawyer and judge in Lower Canada, awarded a baronetcy (Oxford) in 1841, born in New York, son of John Stuart (1740-1811), an Anglican priest and United Empire Loyalist, who was born in Pennsylvania - Or, a fess chequy azure and ermine between two crosses pattée in chief gules and a thistle slipped and leaved proper a bordure of the second. Crest: In front of a demi lion holding in the dexter paw a thistle slipped and leaved, the Roman fasces paleways all proper.
