Heraldic/Genealogical Details:
The family was first mentioned in a document in 1195, and a reliable lineage begins with Heinrich vom Stein, who is documented from 1253 to 1255. The family, with its lordship of Stein in Nassau, belonged to the Imperial Knighthood of the Middle Rhine region and later attained the status of Imperial Barons. Their possessions included Stein Castle and the Stein town palace, as well as the Stein winery in Lorch (Rheingau). In 1816, Imperial Baron Heinrich vom und zum Stein acquired the secularized Cappenberg Abbey in Westphalia. After the extinction of the vom und zum Stein family, these estates passed as an inheritance to the Counts of Kanitz in 1926. Prominent members of the family include Marianne vom und zum Stein and Heinrich Friedrich Karl vom und zum Stein.
