Stein von Altenstein - This ancient family traces its lineage back to the thunder god Thor, and the three hammers on a blood-red field in the main shield of their coat of arms are an allusion to his hammer Mjolnir. According to another legend, however, the three hammers had the following origin: After the murder of the brothers of Altenstein by Bishop Irving of Würzburg from the Reinstein family in 1254, the twelfth of these brothers, the knight Herdegen, escaped. He fled to Vienna and, until his family estates were returned to him, earned a meager living as a stonemason through the hard work of his hands. In remembrance of this, the family later incorporated the three hammers into their coat of arms.
