Durham, England - Charles Simpson Esq. of Sunderland (d. 1833), purchased West House, son of Joseph Simpson Esq., had son Joseph Simpson Esq. of Westhouse (1786-),  magistrate for Durham, mayor of Sunderland in 1838 - Gules a fess between two lions or. Crest: A naked arm holding a wreath of laurel all proper. Motto: Perseverante dabitur (Who, to the Goale, doth persevere).

Shield itself is was borne by John Simpson (1710-1786), Alderman of Newcastle, or his son, John Simpson of Bradley Hall, co. Durham  (born c. 1738) who matriculated at Christ Church, Oxford in 1756 and married Lady Anne Lyon, the daughter of the 6th Earl of Strathmore
