Montgomery of Belhavel, co. Leitrim, Ireland - Hugh Lyons Montgomery of Belhavel (1780-1826), son of Hugh Lyons (d.c. 1792) and Dorothea Montgomery, who was the daughter of Sir Thomas Montgomery of Drogheda (c. 1650-1715), son of Hugh Montgomery of Drogheda - Quarterly, 1st and 4th, azure three fleurs- de-lis or, 2nd and 3rd, gules three gemmed rings or, gemmed azure, overall an escutcheon argent charged with a trefoil slipped vert, for Montgomery. Crest: A cubit arm erect vested gules cuffed argent grasping a broken tilting spear, the point falling downwards proper. Motto: Patriae infelici fidelis (Faithful to my unhappy country).
Note: Sir Thomas, "while studying law in London he had repeatedly come to the relevant authorities’ attention for unruly behaviour and in 1684 was convicted and sentenced to death for having killed another man in the gardens of the Middle Temple. Curiously enough his older brother had likewise been found guilty of murder but thanks to the intervention of their father, Captain Hugh Montgomery of Drogheda, both men received a royal pardon".
