Kirkcudbright, Scotland – last male of this line was James Maxwell (1759-1827), son of James Maxwell (d. 1762), earlier there was there was William Maxwell of Kirkconnell, a man-at-arms to King James V and Mary of Guide, progenitor was Aymer Maxwell who married an heiress of the Kirkconnell in the 15th century - Quarterly, 1st and 4th, argent an eagle displayed sable beaked and membered gules on its breast-an escutcheon of the first charged with a saltire of the second; 2nd and 3rd, azure two croziers in saltire addossed and in chief a mitre or, for Kirkconnell, of that Ilk. Crest—A demi eagle rising proper. Motto—Spero meliora.
