not stated – possibly: William Darby (1588-1649), mercer of Beaminster and Dorchester, was the deputy recorder of the town of Dorchester in 1623 to 1648 and the Under Sheriff of Dorset in 1649. He was an investor in the Dorchester Company and the Council for New England. He was elected Mayor of Dorchester in 1638 but like so many fled Dorchester in 1643 for the safety of London during the Civil War. He was still there is 1645 but returned and was elected under Sheriff of Dorset in 1649.
