William Cochrane of Coldoun (1605-1685), knighted by King Charles I, acquired the estate of Dundonald in 1638, created Baron Cochrane of Dundonald in 1647, created Earl of Dundonald in 1669, son of Alexander Blair, who later assumed the surname Cochrane - Argent a chevron gules between three boars’ heads erased azure. Crest: A horse passant argent. Supporters: Two greyhounds proper, collared and leashed gules.

William had three issue: William (d. 1679), Sir John of Ochiltree, and Grizel.
