There was a James Alexander of Boghall (born 1684), minister of Kilmalcolm, son of Robert Alexander of Blackhouse, Boghall, and Newtoun (1604-1687), Baillie of Paisley. James had grandson William Alexande (1690-1761), Lord Provost of Ednburgh, Member of Parliament, re-exporter of tobacco to France

Later came Boyd Alexander of Southbar and Boghall (1758-1825), Member of Parliament
